I thoroughly enjoyed the Identity Driven Leadership workshop led by the Ashlees. Kyle and Aeriel engaged all of the attendees through thoughtful sharing of their own experiences, storytelling, and activities that pushed us to engage in deep reflection and conversations about identity-related experiences. I have participated in intensive graduate-level diversity courses and trainings and this workshop increased my knowledge about ways to approach diversity and engage people from different backgrounds in constructive conversations about differences. Meet The Ashlees
The Social Justice Couple
Kyle and Aeriel Ashlee are married life partners, best friends, and co-social justice journeyers. Deeply passionate about racial justice and gender equity, together they provide empowering keynotes and training sessions for colleges, universities, nonprofits, and other organizations around the world. Tapping into the wisdom in the room, the Ashlees bring a dynamic and energizing facilitation style to their work.
The Ashlees are award-winning educators, authors, and facilitators. They met at a NASPA Student Affairs Professionals in Higher Education conference in 2011 and were married in 2013. Together, Aeriel and Kyle co-founded Ashlee Consulting in 2014 with the vision of foregrounding story-sharing and self-work in social justice journeying. In recognition of their work, the Ashlees received the 2016 ACPA Coalition for Social Justice Educators Outstanding Educator, Mentor, and Trainer Award.
Aeriel A. Ashlee
Aeriel is a scholar-activist passionate about racial justice and womxn of color leadership empowerment. She has nine years of student affairs and higher education experience, having previously served as Assistant Dean/Advisor to Asian Students at Dartmouth College and as Program Coordinator in the Center for Multicultural Equity & Access at Georgetown University. Additionally, Aeriel has created, directed, and facilitated award-winning intergroup dialogue programs across the United States and in Switzerland and Singapore. She is passionate about Asian American transracial adoptees’ racial identity development in college, womxn of color graduate students in higher education and student affairs programs, and innovative approaches to social justice education. Aeriel’s critical lens coupled with her story-centered facilitation style make her a highly dynamic educator, speaker, and social justice facilitator. Aeriel earned her B.A. from the University of Minnesota and her M.Ed. from the University of Maryland. She is currently pursuing her doctoral studies in Educational Leadership at Miami University.
Kyle C. Ashlee
Kyle has worked in student affairs and higher education for nine years. He has previously served as the Director of Orientation at Franklin University in Switzerland and the Interim Director of the Center for Gender and Student Engagement at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. Throughout his career, he has discovered that engaging in social justice and anti-racism work with populations who hold privileged identities -like himself- is his calling. Kyle specializes in working with boys and men around bystander intervention, ally development, and positive masculinity. He has international consulting experience having worked in places like Switzerland, Poland, the Dominican Republic, and the United Arab Emirates on issues of intercultural communication, international leadership development, and global service learning. Kyle brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to his work as an educator, author, and facilitator. Kyle earned his B.S. from the University of Michigan and his M.S. from Colorado State University. He is currently pursuing his doctoral studies in Educational Leadership at Miami University.
The most striking thing about the Ashlees is how they role model vulnerability, trust, and warmth in the way they work and facilitate. Their approach showed us how to combine heart and head in the work we do, and connect the social justice issues we care about to our personal truths and lived experiences. They bring exuberance, flexibility, and an unparalleled positivity to the community they work with, and are as excited to learn as they are to share. We benefited greatly from their facilitation training, which taught us to create brave spaces, meet people where they are at, to show rather than tell, and create meaningful connections.
